Parenting Education Multi-Cultural Parenting ClassesThe Parenting Journey curriculum is at the base of our multi-cultural parenting classes. Two skilled based classes are added to satisfy ACS requirements. Our philosophy recognizes that immigrant, and often African-American communities, live and raise their children in a separate cultural reality than the dominant culture. Many parents who attend mandatory parenting classes through the child welfare system say that the instructors are often not parents themselves, are too young, and cannot relate to the lives of their “students”. Our purpose is that in addition to professionals, we want to utilize the knowledge and wisdom of elder women who live in the community and have successfully raised their own children, to act as mentors and support to younger mothers who may not have had the benefit of the traditional family support system that was pervasive in communities of various ethnic backgrounds. Health professionals, psychologists and other child development professionals add to our parenting program.Multi-Cultural Parenting Classes for Teen MothersTeen mothers have special concerns and needs that should are addressed in a separate environment which empowers, recognizes, and provides, resources which include educational opportunities, referrals, and family support. Workshops for teen parents give direction in the context of a values based system which builds character and assists the teen in her growth towards responsible adulthood. |
